Volunteer opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates
The Agency is often able to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for tertiary students and graduates. The following points apply to these activities:
  • Most of these activities will require some level of technical expertise in a particular discipline(s).
  • You should have a resume or curriculum vitae available (hardcopy and electronic versions). The co-ordinator may need to assess your application for volunteer participation and you may wish them to hold on to your contact details in the event that a suitable activity is not immediately available.
  • Most activities are not large-scale, formal volunteer programs. Many are research projects done by specialist staff who can place one or two volunteers at a time. The opportunity to work in these activities will depend on seasons and work programs, among other things.
  • In the case of field research, you need to be aware that the work conditions may vary widely:

While workplace health and safety remains a very high priority, standards of accommodation and access to convenience/luxury items will reflect the isolation and nature of the activity.

o You may experience extreme weather, climate or terrain.

o Your work hours and roster will reflect the activity you are doing, e.g. marine turtle monitoring at rookery sites is primarily a night activity and fauna surveys start at dawn.

o You may be required to work as a member of a very small team in an isolated environment for some time.

You should discuss matters such as transport and accommodation with the program co-ordinator.
