Maritime History

For at least 400 years ships have been navigating the coastal waters of Queensland. In that time more than 1,400 ships have been wrecked on the Queensland coastline and fringing reefs. Of the timber hulled ships little remains except ballast and other artefacts. Steel hulled vessels generally last longer but will eventually succumb to corrosion and the forces of nature.

The Queensland Heritage Register currently does not list shipwrecks, however, most wrecks are protected under state and federal legislation.
