Koala conservation and sustainability areas

Development within Koala Conservation Areas and Koala Sustainability Areas in SEQ Region

The Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2006 and Management Program 2006–2016 (the Koala Plan) came into effect on 2 October 2006.

One of the main purposes of the Koala Plan is to promote future land use and development that is compatible with the survival of koala populations in the wild.

To achieve this, the EPA will take on the role of concurrence agency1 responsible for assessing development in Koala Conservation Areas and Koala Sustainability Areas against a set of koala conservation criteria contained in Section 5 of the Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2006 and Management Program 2006–2016.

The EPA is currently developing policies, guidelines and information sheets that will provide detailed information about the development assessment process. This page will be updated when these policies, guidelines and fact sheets become available. Current development application forms for koala assessment can now be found on the Department of Local Government Planning and Sport website. Fact sheets including: koalas and cars, koala conservation, and development in koala habitat areas are now available.

Pre-design conferencing is available to all prospective applicants seeking direction and advice regarding development applications in Koala Habitat Areas.

1 Schedule 2 of the Integrated Planning Regulation 1998 sets out the role and referral jurisdiction of the EPA for development relevant to koala conservation, being that of a concurrence agency for the purposes of the Nature Conservation Act 1992. In undertaking this role the EPA will consider the Nature Conservation Act and the Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2006 and Management Program 2006–2016, including the koala conservation criteria. These criteria are consistent with the Integrated Planning Act 1997, section 3.3.15, which states the matters against which a concurrence agency must assess a development application.
