Coast and oceans

A quarter of all Australians live within 3km of the coast. So it's no surprise that the beach and the sea are our favourite places for recreation. Queenslanders are especially lucky to have some of the world's most beautiful beaches and the world's largest coral — the Great Barrier Reef.

Learn what's so special about Queensland's marine habitats, from mangrove wetlands to seagrass beds, and discover the great variety of marine wildlife — from tiny coral polyps to elusive dugong and huge, spectacular humpback whales.

Don't forget our amazing coastal heritage, including barnacle-laden shipwrecks and shell middens — remains of Aboriginal feasts that remind us of a culture at least 40 000 years old.

Together we need to protect our coast and marine parks.
