Latest Nature Refuges
The latest declaration of nature refuges added sixteen new Nature Refuges totalling almost 6000 hectares of privately managed properties. This brings the total number of Queensland nature refuges to 268, protecting more than 550,000 hectares of biodiversity across the state.
The new refuges range in size from three hectares through to 1200 hectares and incorporate a diverse range of habitats across the state, including a claypan lake near Cunnamulla and rainforest in the southern Atherton Tablelands.
Every nature refuge plays an important role in protecting Queensland’s precious natural values, whether it conserves expanses of remnant bushland, breeding ground for native fauna or even the tiniest endangered flower.
