Tawny frogmouth
Pogargus strigoidesA true master of disguise, the tawny frogmouth can sit a few metres from you and still not be spotted. So well camouflaged is this night hunter that it roosts in the open during the day, passing easily for a dead tree stump.
At night, tawny frogmouths perch in branches or other high places, swooping on unsuspecting prey. An insect eater, it doesn't have the strong claws some birds need to catch larger prey.
Look for tawny frogmouths all around Australia, except in arid regions. Dusk or after dark will be the most likely time to spot them in forests, parks or your own backyard.
