Forest transfer processes in Queensland

The Queensland Government is preparing to dedicate approximately 880,000ha of new protected areas in Queensland resulting from the forest transfers occurring in the Wet Tropics and under the South East Queensland Forests Agreement (SEQFA).

These forest transfer processes have been a commitment of the current Government since 1999. Under the SEQFA timber harvesting has ceased on approximately 406,000ha of State forest and timber reserve. In the Wet Tropics, the decision to transfer 480,000ha of former State forests (mainly in the World Heritage Area) was endorsed by Government in December 2003.

Between now and 2024 a further 375,000ha of State forests in the SEQFA area will be progressively transferred to protected area.

This web site will be updated as new protected areas are gazetted.
